ATLANTA, April 28 (Reuters) – Americans are expressing anxiety about swine flu, and the sale of flu medication and items such as protective face masks are up in some places where cases have been confirmed.
"It’s a weird situation right now," said Aaron Armelin, a telecommunications technician in Los Angeles. "Everyone’s a little leery of anyone coughing. Even though the news makes it seem really, really bad, it doesn’t seem like it’s actually that much of a concern," Armelin added. Interviews with people around the United States indicated few signs of panic or wholesale changes in behavior due to an outbreak of a new virus that has sickened people in several U.S. states and killed up to 149 people in neighboring Mexico.
I detect a bit of disappointment there… awww shucks we just can’t get them thar Americans stirred up. C’mon reporters, y’all aren’t doin’ yer job!!
Seriously, is it any wonder that people are skeptical of mainstream media reporting? Is it any wonder that people can’t seem to get all worked up? What do you want anyway? It’s influenza. If it gets worse, or better… some will get real sick, some won’t get sick, some will die… The Circle of Life continues….
That may sound callous and it isn’t meant to be, but what the heck can we do about it if it does turn into a pandemic? We could start running around like chickens with our heads cut off….. errrr anyway….
We’ve lived through live media coverage 24 hours on BBC of the gulf war, 9/11 and the war on terror, now banks and car dealerships are failing and we can’t pay our mortgages and you want us to get all worked up about the FLU??
We’re tougher than y’all think! You better step up the coverage a bit.
